Battle 2: The United States Constitution vs. The Declaration of Independence

(If you haven’t already read and voted on Battle 1: Revolution vs. Democracy please do so now!)

The second battle in our tournament brings us a face-off of American documents.  One declared us a free nation while the other set the guidelines for our society.  This battle sees The United States Constitution up against The Declaration of Independence!

Who Is More American?

The United States Constitution

A constitution is an established law or custom.  It is the structure that makes up a society, as well as the glue that holds it together as a nation.  In America, every citizen follows the laws and customs written in our United States Constitution.  The Constitution is our written plan of government that was created in 1787, and adopted by our founding fathers in 1789.  The work of our forefathers, the Constitution is an example of cooperation and compromise.  The democracy we value in America is based on our Constitution.  This American document allows each citizen to enjoy his or her freedoms in our democracy.  Certainly a document that illustrates the American spirit, the United States Constitution is perhaps the single most important American document ever created.

VS.

The Declaration of Independence

While we are discussing important American documents that illustrate the American spirit, let’s introduce our Declaration of Independence.  This document declared the 13 American colonies free from Great Britain.  Mainly written by Thomas Jefferson and adopted on July 4, 1776, our Declaration birthed America.  Setting the stage for an American democracy, Jefferson argued in our Declaration the rights that a government should allow its people to enjoy.  To this day we honor our founding fathers and the document that made their dream of America come true with a holiday.  Every year on Independence Day (July 4th) we enjoy fireworks and festivities to celebrate our independence as a nation.  The Declaration of Independence is the foundation for American civilization.

The United States Constitution is our written plan of government while The Declaration of Independence is our foundation for a free society.

So, I ask you, the reader: Who Is More American?

The United States Constitution or The Declaration of Independence?

  1. This one was tough! I’m going with the D.O.I! It was the document that culminated with the strong group of fighting colonies coming together and becoming America. HOW AMERICAN!
